Obituary for Barbara J. Springer

Barbara J. Springer, 89, of Philipsburg, passed away Friday, May 18, 2018 at Windy Hill Village, Philipsburg. Born November 3, 1928 in Philipsburg, she was a daughter of the late J. Lester & Margaret K. (Rombach) George. Barb was a 1946 graduate of Philipsburg High School and had been a life-long employee of Philipsburg Marble & Granite. She retired from United Federal Savings Bank in State College, where she was Secretary of the personnel department. She had also worked at the former Daily Journal in the advertising department. Barb was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Philipsburg, where she was a Deacon, a Trustee and Secretary of the Presbyterian Women. For over 20 years she helped the women of the church make crafts to sale at the yearly Presbyterian Home Bazaar. Barb had a passion for serving and helping others, including helping deliver Meals On Wheels when it was first organized in Philipsburg; organizing the first John Lux Bloodmobile for the First Presbyterian Church; chairing the American Cancer Society and scout drives in the Philipsburg area; organizing and heading (with the help of Elaine Ziff) the first Philipsburg Area Branch of Centre County Unit of the American Cancer Society; serving on the Benjamin Rush Awards committee; volunteering at the former Centre Community Hospital; making audio tapes for the Sight Loss Support Group in State College; rewardingly serving as a member of the board of the Moshannon Valley YMCA and helping organize the first craft fair held at the “Y”; appearing in 4 stage productions with the Pennhurst Players; being a member and past president of the Philipsburg Contemporary Club and being a Candy Striper during World War II at the Philipsburg State Hospital. When not volunteering, Barb enjoyed movies, sewing and knitting. On July 25, 1948 in Philipsburg, she married John H. Springer, who passed away January 12, 1985. Barb is survived by a son Paul A. Springer and his wife Joann of Philipsburg; two sisters Gretchen Harrington of Florida and Judith Besket and her husband Joseph of State College; a granddaughter Dana Alexis Potter and her husband Josh; and three great grandchildren Olivia Springer, Jace Potter and Aiden Claar. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 509 E. Presqueisle St., Philipsburg, PA on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at 11:00 am with Rev. Dr. Katie Hopper officiating. Honoring Barb’s request, there will be no public viewing. Burial will be private at the Philipsburg Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Moshannon Valley YMCA, PO Box 426, Philipsburg, PA 16866 or to the Holt Memorial Library, 17 N.
